A simple path that matches how energy appears on Australian labels.
- Convert label energy to your tracking unit: kJ → calories (kcal) or calories (kcal) → kJ.
- If the label shows per 100g, convert to your portion: Energy per Serving.
- Compare against the daily reference: Daily kJ Intake.
- Add multiple items for a meal total: Meal Energy.

How to read energy on food labels
Food labels show energy in kilojoules (kJ). Many apps and international resources still use calories (kcal), so conversions are often needed.
Energy is commonly shown in two formats:
- Per 100g / 100mL (useful for comparing products)
- Per serve (useful for what you actually eat)
Many labels also use 8,700 kJ per day as a general reference value. It’s a label reference — individual needs vary by body size, age, and activity level.
